Unusual coveralls in 1905 picture NNG

I bought an image off eBay, for the loco photo (1362 NP compound 10 wheeler) and, in scanning at high resolution, noted these strange overalls! Instead of the usual thin stripes, the stripes appear to be formed of dots or ovals.
Anybody seen these before?
