What are these????

Hi
Can any one please tell me what the square boxes either side of the Chimney are? On some of them they have two while others have only one.
I sorted out about the skul generator in a earier post, but as you work through modeling these cars in detail, you begin to wonder what they are for; and you need to know because someone out there will ask me that question
