The Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway have almost completed restoration of War Department Light Railway No 778. It was built in 1917 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, USA (works number 44656), it was one of 495 4-6-0 tank engines built by Baldwin, for use on the vast network of 2ft (610mm) gauge lines laid to supply the World War 1 battlefields, in northern France, with food, ordnance and manpower. Later sold to India then purchased for preservation in the UK.
The restoration has included construction of a new boiler. It should be properly complete in 5 weeks time - as I live at the other end of town hopefully I'll get to see it fairly soon. The picture was taken 5 weeks ago and given to me today, no idea who took it but Corky, (Chief Engineer at the place I'm a driver), passed it to me today. He has been involved in the work.
