During a ski vacation in Telluride this month, I noted that realtors are listing the former Rio Grande Southern RR depot for sale. The station is nicely restored and has been used as a restaurant. The offering brochure also suggests the depot would make a fine ski lodge since it is only two blocks from the gondola. The asking price -- a cool $4.5 million.
The RGS Receiver got just a little over $400,000 when the entire 162 mile RGS mainline went for scrap in 1952. The various parcels of RGS property like the Telluride depot went for peanuts. Fifty years makes a heck of a difference.
