The meter gauge Rhaetian Ralway in Switzerland ran its annual public fan trip (charters are also run) with its steam rotary plough XROT 9213 (built 1910) on 17th February. Looks like wonderful weather but not a lot of snow. Follow the Link.
The passengers were hauled in open coaches headed by 2 vintage electric railacars, headed by No. 34, which is two years older than the rotary.
The railcars are hauling a spreader. The practice on the RhB is to clear snow to a much greater width that of the track itself. The routine method of operation is:
1. Clear the track with the rotary
2. Clear the snow on either side and dump it on the track with the spreader.
3. Clear that snow with a second pass of the rotary.
The same method is ued today with the modern rotaries. 9213 is still held in reserve, but as far as I am aware it has only been used for fan trips in recent years.
