Yesterday I took a drive up the railroad grade to Crown King, AZ. The weather was great and I was tired of being couped up indoors after a business trip to VA. I have to say that I was missing the AZ winter at that point. I'm not used to shoveling the cold stuff to get a car out!
Sorry for the SG content but this is a nice little mountain line with switch backs, a tunnel and sharp curves. The link to the map below shows the Bradshaw Mountain ROW and part of the Prescott & Eastern. The P&E is the northern leg between Humboldt and Mayer. The BMR starts at Mayer and ends up at the mining town of Crown King.
The exploration yestarday started at Cleator (historic name was Turkey Creek). The town was renamed after the proprieter of the general store. At Cleator the road is on top of the grade. If you stop at the general store you can look north and see the cut were the line from Mayor approaches the road.
We drove the road up to the first switch back and got out and explored. It was fairly easy to spot were the grade used to be but not much in the way of hardware. We then went up the road to the series of switchbacks at Middleton. Lots of off the road exploration can be done around Middleton. Up beyond the switch backs the tunnel is bypassed by the road. The tunnel is somewhat open on the northern end but has been completely filled in on the southern side. Farther down the road near Crown King the grade ends up on the opposite side of the creek from the road. Various structures now sit on the ROW in this area.
I'll try and post a few photos.
