Today's issue of the Dallas Morning News (Tuesday, November 28) reports that the state legislature has agreed to fund the tourist steam-powered railroad running between Palestine and Rusk in East Texas for another few months. The reprieve will enable the railroad to seek additional state funds for track and equipment maintenance (some $12 million is needed) with the goal of turning the railroad over to a private operator. Key legislators seem supportive of efforts to keep the railroad running. See "State Railroad Gets Reprieve" by Diane Jenings. While this is not narrow gauge, it is an important steam-powered railroad.
