On the K-28 $478 below there are two pipe I cannot figure out what they were/are for. They are a little hare to see but the are midway for-to-aft on the smokebox and nearly on the side center line. The pipe connectons into the smokebox are larger than he pipes leading aft from them. If you drew a line along the rea line fo the stack it would jsut about intersect with these two fitting on the side of the smoke box. Anyway, anyone know what these were for?
They do not appear on all K-28's and I cannot find searching pictures a correlation to an date period or there being limited to specific K-28 numbered locos.
If you ahve a copy of the NG Pictorial book #X1 there is a much better pictuer on Pg 118 #474; Pg 120 #475, Pg 124 #477 (only the piping is slightly different than the other two.). On Pg 128 #478 has the two pipe fittings onb the side of the smokebox but no pipes leading aft to anything. The #478 small pipe fittings are just ahead of the top engine plaque/plate(?) and if you draw a line aling he top edge of the snow plow mounting bracketthe line would run right between the two pipe fittings.
Hope that is enough detail and specifics so someone can tell me wha they wer and did.
Thanks.
