D&SNGRR Travels to Cascade Canyon While Tracks to Silverton are Cleared
Durango, CO –Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Maintenance of Way crews are hard at work clearing mud and debris from two slides that crossed the tracks in the Animas Canyon. Heavy rainfall on Friday, October 6 caused two trains traveling back to Durango from Silverton to back up to Silverton. Passengers from two trains were returned safely to Durango by bus.
Train service was cancelled on Saturday, October 7, allowing crews to assess potential track damage and begin the clearing process. Crews are working with heavy equipment to restore the areas, just above Needleton and just below Elk Park, for safe train passage into Silverton.
An excursion traveled to Cascade Canyon, 26 miles from Durango, on Sunday, October 8 and is scheduled to make the same trip on Monday, October 9. D&SNGRR officials are hopeful the train will resume service to Silverton by the early part of the week. Passengers are asked to visit the Durango depot or call (970) 247-2733 to inquire about scheduled trips, change reservations, or book tickets.
