Pulling power

September 30, 2006 03:26PM
After looking at the pic's below of the 473 and 481 doubleheading 16 cars it got me thinking. I have a video "Rio Grande of the Rockies" which has a segment where the 478 is pulling 16 cars solo to Silverton. It was back in the early 50's and it was about 10 freight cars and 7 passenger cars and caboose. I guess I'm wondering would a lone K-36 have that much diffaculty pulling the 16 cars by itself? Was it doubleheaded to reduce the wear and tear on a single locomotive? Just curious. Thanks for any replies.
BTW if you don't own a copy of "Rio Grande of the Rockies" your missing some truely great ng footage from the early 50's.
