Hello!
Long time lurker, first time poster here.
My name’s Josh and I’ve been an avid NG fan for two decades or so now.
I’ve always enjoyed the look of NG, especially the later 40’s and 50’s DRGW equipment. My main outlet for my NG obsession has been modeling. First in HOn3 and now in 1:20.3. In my pursuit of modeling accuracy I have discovered the wealth of information that can be had from books like the “Narrow Gauge Pictorial” from Grandt. In turn, I began to collect vintage photos and photo postcards of the Rio Grande and RGS from the various outlets (ebay, estate sales, antique stores, etc) myself. This brings me to my reason for posting…
I’m hard pressed to find an outlet with more information about NG as well as the people who document the NG than here, so I figure this the place to ask!
I would say I now have 200 or so vintage photos and real photo postcards. Of these well over a hundred or so appear to be original photos and real photo postcards form 1930s, 40s, and 50s. While some have zero identifying marks (date, photographer, copyright, etc) many are simply stamped with a name, or collection name on the back. Some of these names I certainly recognize – Perry, Kindig, Krause. Others, I do not – Ameling, Will, Campbell. The question is this – how do I share these photos with other “likeminded” NG and D&RGW enthusiasts? I’m aware of the Otto Perry collection, but almost all the other names turn up virtually nothing on internet searches such as google. Is there a resource to the NG fan as to who’s photos and collections are copyrighted and who’s are public domain? I’ve been advised by friends in the hobby that books like Grandt’s are simply published from collections like mine, with disregard to copyright, but somehow in today’s litigious world I’m suspect of this to say the least.
I’d like to share some of my photos, but of course I don’t want to break any rules in doing so. Is there a way to ascertain the “status” of some of these more popular NG photographers' photos?
Has anyone else here been down this road before? (and if so, was there a thread? I tried searching for one, but no dice.)
Thanks so much!
Josh
