At the end of operations there were at least a half dozen or so drop bottom gons in Durango with an "AX" in front of the car number. What does "AX" mean? My guess would be that these were for use in some kind of company service - to haul ballast maybe. Yet it appears from photos of that time that the Grande used what must have been any gon available for ballast. Were other types of cars similarly lettered?
Thanks in advance.
