1950's freight rules

I am begining to shift the operational emphasis of my narrow gauge layout to the pipe train era of the 50's and early 60's. I need some source to find operational rules for placement of general freight, GRAMPS tank cars and pipe units in a freight consist. I have seen pictures of tank cars in the front of the consist and at the rear and placement of idler cars, both single and double. Also where helper engines were placed, front, middle, rear? My main emphasis is btween Chama and Cumbrus Pass.
