NNG-Gold Camp Road

Found this today on another RR website. Its not narrow gauge but it is historically significant to Colorado. The mountain bikers have been trying to keep this section of the old Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek District RR closed to automobile traffic, by legally interfering with the Forest Service process and plans to rebuild Tunnel 3 which collapsed in the 1980's. Does anybody know any more about this which was in the Colorado Springs paper on Tuesday? It may not be narrow gauge, but this sort of thing affects all of us who are interested in preserving our rail heritage.
Historic Gold Camp railroad tunnel catches fire
Arson may have destroyed a historic Colorado railroad site over the weekend. Gold Camp Road Tunnel 3 was built in 1899 and is one of the historic sites listed on the National List of Historic Places.
Hikers reported a fire on Monday and investigators believe it started on Sunday. The fire destroyed the wood beams that line the tunnel. Its future is uncertain now that its structural integrity may be compromised. The fire will continue to smolder for weeks, much like a mine fire.
An extensive investigation into this fire is expected. The U.S. Forest Service will have help from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the A.T.F. and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Those responsible for the fire had to hike into the area because vehicle access is restricted. Please call the forest service or CSFD with any information regarding anyone in the area on Saturday or Sunday. - KRDO-TV13, Colorado Springs/Pueblo CO, courtesy Larry W. Grant
