I always admired the UP from how it and the CP tied the nation together. I also liked the big diesels (DD40AX) and the turbines.
I just read the train wire from Trains.com.
UP has now kicked out the Boy Scouts on 4 days notice from a former SP piece of land that the scouts used. They had a 27 foot trailer there for 20-odd years storing their equipment. UP claims it is a national security issue.
UP has also taken Mike's Train House to court for copyright infringement (No specific produce identified) and for misleading advertising.
I recall hearing that the Pennsy's downfall occured when the higher-ups in the 1950's and 60's were no longer RR men and started lining their pockets (Yesterday's Enron?). They had to push through a merger with the Central tyo try to save something. They had the great crash of most all northeastern RRs.
And I love PRR.
Is the UP loosing sight of what is really important?
I recall years ago (1970's maybe), I asked one railroad employee about models and he said they liked the free advertising on the models.
I wanted to have Bowser make 100 box cars lettered for the Gainesville Midland Railroad (a short line). I contacted CSX who finally ended up with the tracks. They wanted payment for a railroad name that had not been used by them since 1982 and had not been independent since 1959 and who had no logo, just RR Roman lettering in yellow on box car red. The wanted a fee so large that I did not think I could sell the 100 box cars.
Danged their hide.
