Caboose question

After looking at the shop updates from Carlos I noticed that the 0505 has a windscreen between the two windows in the cupola. I assume this was done since it has controls to operate the flanger blade when they do flanger turns. I have some pictures back in the early 40's of the 0574 with the same style windscreen--was this a common thing on the Grande or a conductor just modifying his caboose to fit his needs? I thought it was interesting and adds a little to the caboose. Any additional info would be great. Thanks.
