Rick Grout and I are researching this incredible little 3' gauge railroad which had, among other things, a steady grade of 13%, where they dropped 700 feet in 1 mile. There was also a horseshoe curve of 75 degrees, partly on a trestle. It operated on Vancouver Island, BC from about 1900-1915, first to a connection with the standard gauge E&N, and soon to a smelter in Crofton. Total mileage was about 12. The first loco was a tiny class A Shay of 8.5 tons, which could handle 1 car at a time.
We've contacted the author of an article in the NGSL article, (March 2000)and he is providing what data he has. We plan on replicating the line for MSTS.
If any of you have info on this line, I'd appreciate your sharing it! Among other questions, what type of switchstand did they use?
I do have the softbound book, Shays on the Switchbacks, on this railway.
We have a very interesting thread going over at Railfan.net Forums, link below.
