For those of you who missed the 25th National Narrow Gauge Convention in Dearborn, MI this weekend and the pre-convention special at the Huckleberry, I want to say that you missed one fabulous show.
I thanked Marty Knox and as many of the operating crew as possible for putting on such a great show. Marty and the shop staff at the Hucklebery Railroad have to be complimented for the effort put forth to get D&RGW K-27 #464 operating for the event which was sponsored by the Mid-Michigan Railway Historical Society, Inc. - "Friends of the Huckleberry Railroad" on Tuesday August 30th.
From what I heard, 300+ showed up to ride the railfan special pulled by 464. The Huckleberry Railroad treated us to a two hour trip which included three runpast locations and one static shot on the trestle in Gennessee. There were two runpasts at each location which allowed the photograhers a chance to change location in the well organized photo lineup.
As well as the train trip, there were informative guided shop tours in groups of about 20. Also, a meal was provided for all in the banquet hall at Crossroads Village.
Crossroads Village and the Huckleberry Railroad are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The staff opened the park to all of us on this special occasion.
If you have not had a chance to visit the "Huck," you should plan a visit to see both the park and the railroad. Not only will you see D&RGW 464, but you can see ex "Chili Line" coaches 306 and 320 along with ex RGS coach 360. (first 3 cars in the train in that order)
Below is a shot of Marty and the crew as they prepare to depart at 5:30pm.
Marty, please convey our thanks to all who made this such a special occasion and thanks also to the Mid-Michigan Railway Historical Society Inc. for sponsoring the event.
