Superheated vs Saturated

July 22, 2005 01:59PM
Hi, I understand that superheated is superior to saturated because of giving you more mileage out of your supply of water. But what are the advantages of superheated over saturated in the pulling power of the locomotive? If all things are equal, such as boiler pressure, cyl bore and stroke, etc. Is there any difference? I had heard that Knotts had converted all of their locos to saturated because of ease of maintainence. Other than more water stops, is there a loss of power? Thanks!
