The scheduled 1:30 train arriving in Silverton just a few minutes ago (running late 2 hours and arriving about 3:30) was heralded with an air horn from the lead locomotive, the diesel #7, "Big Al." This was a long train with 14 cars, including the boxcar and caboose. While my first reaction was that this was the first break with an all steam heritage of scheduled service to Silverton, it turns out that there was a breakdown with one the original engines and the #7 was pulled from the Cascade train and substituted for the disabled engine. It was, never-the-less, rather disheartening to hear an air horn whistle in as the train progressed through town.
For the record, the 473 had the honor of playing second fiddle to the #7. And I'm not aware which engine had the breakdown. I guess this is what passes for excitement in this little burg if one has an interest in the narrow gauge.
