Chingawassa Springs car

June 17, 2005 05:42PM
There is the hulk of a passenger car in Marion, Kansas that operated for 4 years on the Marion Belt and Chingawassa Springs Railroad from 1889 to 1893. The body of it is 28' long and it is 8'3" wide. The width would indicate to me narrow gauge, but write ups by local people of many years ago indicate it was standard gauge. I have seen a small piece of the old rail and itis clearly very very light.
My question is if anyone reading this group might know of the car's heritage. It operated with one sister passenger car and was hauled by a double ended steam locomotive. There weren't many of them, according to my searching, that operated in the US. So if anyone knows about them or can steer me to a source that might be helpful, I would appreciate it very much. Many thanks for whatever information you can provide.
