Whaleback vs regular tenders

Other than the SP's use of the whaleback, and thus the narrow guage railroads that ran under SP control or influence, why would a railroad use a whaleback tender instead of a regular style tender with an oil bunker installed?
Where there advantages in operation, i.e. I guess visibility, capacity?
Or was it just a matter of preference?
Thanks.
