C&TS ballast hoppers

Its been some time since this subject came up, but I was wondering whats the latest on the C&TS hoppers that they got via EBT some years back. As I recall there was an issue with the fact they had to be extensively rebuilt or something. Anyway was wondering if this might be a project for the Friends, and even if they could knock out one car per year, that would be helpful when it comes time to spread large amounts of ballast.
I know money is the major obstacle here, but was wondering what needs to be done, and if the FRIENDS ever considered taking on one as a project which would be useful in work train service immediately.
What does the railroad use now, dump gons???
