More sander questions

Thanks for all the information provided thus far.
Obviously mountain railroads would use a great deal of sanding due to the grades.
How much sand would be used on railroads where the land is relatively flat? For example, railroads in the far south.
How much sanding would a swamp logger use - the Argent used hand sanding - not the sand domes - I guess the high humidity made it difficult to keep the sand dry.
Was/is it common practice to use sand when starting a heavy train?
