Salida Record, Feb. 17, 1905: "After six years of almost uninterrupted traffic over Marshall, Poncha and Alpine passes, the companies this year are experiencing much trouble in keeping the roads open. The first of the week there were five dead engines and a stock train consisting of five cars of cattle and four of sheep snow bound on Marshall Pass, and while the rotary experienced little difficulty in getting to the imprisoned crews, it was necessary to dig the dead engines free from snow before they could be moved."
