After about 70 years Bellevue and Cascade caboose 055 is once again on live rails. Last weekend a group from the Midwest Central traveled to Bellevue loaded and transported the caboose back to Mt. Pleasant. It was unloaded and put back on it's trucks yesterday.
The caboose worked the B&C until the line closed and then sat at a farm rotting away. In the early 80's Mr. Shroder did a wonderful job restoring the caboose with all new wood. He maintained the car on his property as sort of a guesthouse.
Getting the caboose out of it’s location posed some problems. It was situated in a way very difficult to get a semi trailer or crane to. For that reason we decided to haul it ourselves. A 4-wheel farm trailer was located and mounts for the caboose were made.
It took most of Saturday to finish the trailer mounts for the caboose on site and load the trucks and caboose. Sunday was spent on the road bringing it to Mt. Pleasant. The move went very well and we arrived back in the afternoon.
It will need truck, frame, and brake work before returning to service. Hopefully by next year it will be carrying the markers once again.
Photos show loading the trucks, the rig parked at the motel, and backing the caboose into our shop.
