Rail Cars Costing State $23 Million
SANTA FE— The state has agreed to spend about $23 million on 10 passenger rail cars for the first phase of a proposed commuter rail system, Gov. Bill Richardson announced.
The Mid Region Council of Governments signed the contract this week with Montreal-based Bombardier Transit.
The 10 cars would be delivered within a year, according to Chris Blewett, director of transportation and planning services for the council.
Richardson said the goal is to have Belen-to-Bernalillo commuter rail service under way in the late fall of 2005.
The governor recently signed an agreement with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad that allows the state to use BNSF tracks for the commuter rail.
