The Colorado Railroad Museum’s engine #346 Left Strasburg today, bound for Golden.
While looking much the same as she did upon arrival last year, #346 is in much better condition mechanically than before. Several patches were installed in the firebox, as well as several new boiler braces, a new front flue sheet and the bottom 1/6 of the second course. Many new studs and washout plugs were made and installed.
All journal boxes were overhauled, and lateral slop reduced. The ½ flanges on the #2 and #3 axles were removed as it was apparent that they were incompatible with the limited lateral necessary to avoid conflicts between the drivers and the equalizing and firebox.
The shoes and wedges were overhauled, and the tram corrected. New knuckle pin bushings were installed in the side rods. The valve timing was reset.
When the CRM crew reinstalls the cab, jacket and appliances, they should be able to enjoy a long period of reliable operation with the #346.
