Sumpter Valley Ry. 1st #1

This is Sumpter Valley Ry. 1st #1 on the South Baker turntable. The man in the cab may be William A. Roundy, who worked as a shop man / machinist and later engineer for the Sumpter Valley. This engine is Brooks C/N 530 built in 1881 for the Utah Northern. It was one of the first two engines acquired. Charles Nibley who was a close business associate of David Eccles was put in charge of construction of the Sumpter Valley Ry. In May of 1890, he made a proposal to Charles Adams, president of the Union Pacific to take narrow gauge engines and other equipment from the recently standard gauged Utah & Northern lines. One sources says that the first two engines may have arrived at Baker as early as Nov. of 1890. Whatever the case, construction was completed to McEwen in 1891, so this and another engine Brooks C/N 626 were on hand for the construction trains. If I am right that the man in the cab is Mr. Roundy, then the photo was taken no earlier than 1905 when he went to work for SVRy. This engine was renumbered in 1906, but I can't actually discern a number on the engine or tender. If it was after the renumbering then it could be as late as 1912 when it was traded to the Eureka Nevada. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
