Oh, the stories this caboose could tell. #5 was constructed in the South Baker SVRy car shop in 1915 from an earlier car. Apparently the railroad didn't have a "Rebuilt" stencil handy in 1926 when it had some repairs done, so for most of its life it has had 1926 build dates on the sides. #5 was on the last revenue trip to Bates and back in 1947, then was stripped of heavy iron and sold to SVRy's auditor F. M. Chandler who set it up as a cabin in the woods. Later it was retrieved and on display at a local museum less trucks, couplers and brake components. Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration acquired it many years ago making it serviceable to run in our trains as seen here.
