Looking from the Service Pit

Long time SVRR volunteer Jeff Chittick took a series of photos around, on and under Sumpter Valley Ry. #19 that could be used to train new crew members. If you have seen this location in person, you probably had grease on your clothes, hands and a few surprise locations to be discovered later. The present day configuration of #19 is very much as she was on the White Pass & Yukon with a few more upgrades. The flexible lines seen in the photo supply grease to the hub liners and are fed from a battery of grease fittings centrally located on each side of the engine on top of the frame, which are easily accessed with a grease gun that is small button head equipped. If I understand correctly, this grease scheme was installed at the White Pass. The copper lines feed oil to the driving boxes and are fed by a Nathan force feed lubricator run off of the valve gear. This I believe was installed when #19 was restored at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon by Doyle McCormack and SVRR volunteers. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
