A tiny 2-foot gauge train in Big Country - SA

August 20, 2022 07:45PM
This 10 car 2-foot gauge freight train, pulled by an NG15 2-8-2, is 163 miles from Port Elisabeth and 14 miles from its destination of Avontuur in the Langkloof valley of South Africa. The location is just west of the siding at Ongelegen, and the peak is part of the Tsitsikama mountain range that separates the Langkloof valley from the Indian Ocean coast. At Avontuur the box cars will be spotted for export apple loading, before a 177-mile return haul to the pre-cooling sheds at the harbor in Port Elisabeth. This photo was taken near the end of the annual deciduous fruit rush that saw about 50,000 tons of fruit moved on the 2-foot gauge. May 25, 1976.
