Question about internal boiler hardware

In looking at Carlos Llamas' pictures from the first week of march, I was looking at the fifteenth picture of the week:
and was wondering what the bar/tube in the upper left of the picture is. It looks to be solid, but I could be mistaken.
Does anyone know what this is?
