Back in the 50's, dad, an NP conductor, would always spot several possible trees from the caboose. My brother and I would always go along to cut the tree, parking at the nearest crossing. It was usually a mile or so down the right of way.
Yesterday, my wife and I went up to Larch on the old Sumpter ROW, and hiked downgrade a mile or so in 6" of snow. We found our perfect tree growing up between the ties! (yes, we did get a permit) Had a great time up there, and, since I just finished laying track through here in the train simulator, I was amazed at how similar they look.
Yes, I'm still plugging away at the computor simulation of the Sumpter Valley. Track is now laid to Whitney, and most scenery is in as far as Sumpter, and partway up the grade to Larch.
Here, you see #251 with a string of empties, 3 miles above S-Wye.
