Book recomendation

Need to learn more about steam locomotive mechanical operating principles and parts terminology - can anyone recommend a book or website for this? Would like for it to be fairly detailed, but don’t need (and can’t afford) a Locomotive Compendium. Also prefer it to be small locomotive and/or Narrow Gauge oriented if possible.
Made inquiry to CRRM bookstore but never got an answer.
