D&RGW K-37's

I just recieved a few books from my grandmother that she picked up for my dad and I (she is visiting from Phoenix). One is called Cinders & Smoke. I found some builders photos in the back. Did the K-36's later get new tanks? The original seems way lower, maybe its because it doesn't have any coal boards yet.
Also...Did the D&RG shorten the front pilot part of the frames on the K-36's? It seems longer in the builders shot, or is that because they dont have any break cylinders on it yet? And that big tool box. They also have a large photo of the 497 on the flat car at Denver just after being assebled for its trip to Alamosa.
Neat stuff...
Im sure you guys have many things to say to expand on this post!
