The Boulder County Railway Historical Society (Boulder Colorado) is now the proud owner of Denver, South Park & Pacific boxcar #608. The car, which has been used as a cabin in Cardinal, Colorado (along the grade of the Colorado & Northwestern) since 1915 or so, was donated to us today.
Pulling the tarpaper off of one side of the car revealed good siding and the clearly visable D.S.P. & P. RR 608. Peeling the tarpaper off of the other side, we found wet rotten siding and an ant colony! Oh Joy! On the plus side the car is in pretty good shape and still has its bolsters and truss rods.
From what we know of the car, it was part of a group of boxcars bought by the C&N-W from the UP in 1897, when the C&N-W began construction. The cars were used as construction and outfit cars and later as on line sheds.
Does anyone know of a roster of South Park freight cars? we would love to know more about this car!
Photos of the car will be on our website soon.
