This weekend the WW&F had a spring ballast party. 500 feet of track was put into service (roughly what was laid last year) and another 500 or so was spiked, ballasted, and rough tamped. Weather on Saturday was rainy but it kept the mosquitos away. Friday and Sunday were both good days.
This year we had the help of two air-powered jitterbug tampers. The result is a nice-looking piece of track. We've long resisted mechanical means of track maintenance but have finally determined that with our track length (1.24 miles) and the desire to be productive with our volunteer manpower that mechanical tampers are a necessary evil. A donation of tampers should be arriving in June (provided the weather doesn't prevent our courier from getting them).
