The NG sleepers that went to Nevada

February 04, 2003 09:50PM
Within the last year some additional information has come to light about the two narrow gauge Pullman cars that went to Nevada.
These are the two cars sold in July 1904 to Mr. H. Schlacks, a dealer. The cars were the CIMMARRON and DOLORES (orginally named OGDEN) that had been built in 1883.
The cars were sold to the Tonopah Railroad. One arrived as MIZPAH in September 1904. The other arrived as SILVER TOP in November 1904. The names honor the two top producing mines in Tonopah. After the line was standard gauged the Tonopah & Goldfield reported that it had two narrow-gauge sleeping cars on standard gauge trucks. Then in 1911 it found a buyer for the cars.
The buyer was Nevada-California-Oregon which appearently named the cars MADELINE and WAVERLY. Thse cars were used on a long daytime run where the buffet proved useful. In March 1915 the Reno Evening Gazette reported that car WAVERLY had just been renamed ALTURAS. The ALTURAS was retired by the road in 1917 and set out on the ground at one of the stations. The MADELINE was finally retired when the SP regauged the line in 1928; it went onto the gound at Wendel, California. The other car was relocated and was photographed on the northwest side of the town of Alturas in 1969.
