Dual Gauge Couplers on 480s and 490s

January 30, 2003 08:49PM
The D&RGW applied what they called "3-way" couplers to K36s numbers 487 and 488 in September of 1930 at a cost of $57.59 each. At that time, the 480s were based out of Salida for use on Marshall Pass and the Valley Line. They were not yet permitted on the Crested Butte branch. In the summer of 1932, the 480s and 490s were switched due to the very heavy coal traffic out of Crested Butte and Baldwin. At that time, the dual gauge couplers were removed from the 480s and transferred to two of 490s.
