The subject of second hand rail on the D&RGW came up and I thought everyone might find this interesting...

Alamosa
The laying of the 85 pound rail between LaVeta and Alamosa will soon be complete. The 52 pound rail taken out is being shipped to Silverton branch for changing out the 30 pound rail on that branch.
July 25, 1916
Authorities for Expenditures:
Between Romeo and Antonito: Removal of 125 ft iron span, and erection of 110 ft steel span to be removed from bridge 205-B, First Division at Bridge 278-D Fourth Division. The present span is too light, and is needed on Silverton narrow gauge line. The 110 ft span is to be released from Bridge 205-B on account of the 2-10-2 engines. Total cost $4.638,00; chargeable to Expenses $3,962.00; chargeable to Road & Equipment; $676,00.
Hercules: Erection of 64 ft second-hand through girder in place of 64 ft frame span at Bridge 496-A, Silverton Branch. Second-hand 64 ft through girder formerly located at F&CC railway at Canon City. The present frame span and approaches are worn out and must be replaced. Total cost $2,567,00; Chargeable to expenses $1.988,00; chargeable to Road & Equipment; $579,00.

Poncha Pass, Colorado Installation of SH 52-lb rail in passing track, in lieu of 30-lb and 40-lb rail, which is too light for heavy traffic.
August 1922
Villa Grove, Colorado Installation of SH 52-lb rail in east leg and tail of wye track, replacing 30-lb rail, which is too light for heavy traffic.

Salida
A small gang of 25 men is engaged on the Alamosa branch and have laid about 7 miles of second hand 52 pound rail between Villa Grove and Alamosa, replacing 30 and 35 pound rail. This is in order to accommodate the new power (480s) which is expected to arrive this month. The work of strengthening bridges between Salida and Marshall Pass is well underway and we are ready to receive the new narrow gauge engines. We have a narrow gauge ditcher working in the vicinity of Marshall Pass and have just completed an AFE covering the same in this vicinity.

Toltec Tunnel #2. Replace 30 with 65 pound rails. $874.41

Alamosa
24.68 miles of 30 to 40 pound rail on the Santa Fe branch will be relaid with 65 pound rail.
30 miles of 30 pound rail, Pagosa Junction to Pagosa Springs will be relaid with 52 pound.
