Differences in boiler designs

January 01, 2013 08:17PM
Over the years I have read about different boiler designs. Often riveted boilers are mentioned when I read about boilers on this board.

Reading about the new steam locomotives being built in India I read the last three of these four being built would have welded boilers.

I also have read the oddball cabforward on the NPC utilized a marine boiler.

What are the basic differences between a riveted and welded boiler?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using either on a working steam locomotive?

What is the difference between a marine boiler and the ones commonly used on locomotives?

Finally, what are the main differences in design between a stationary boiler and one used on a locomotive?

Thanks for being patient and answering these types of questions. For those of us who are not knowledgeable about these matters, the information is very interesting.
