John West's recent posting on Venezuela reminded me a link in a British Narrow Gauge group to another superb photo on Shorpy.
American Fleet at La Guaira
If you zoom in on the bottom right hand corner there is a small narrow gauge locomotive. This one of a pair of 36 inch gauge locomotives supplied by Hunslet (works numbers 389 and 390) supplied in 1896 to the La Guaira Harbour Corporation Ltd.
La Guaira also had a narrow gauge line linking it to Caracas, opened a few years later. It appears that the British beat the Americans in a contest to build this line, which is well described in Allen Morrison's web site.
The La Guaira and Caracas Railway
With Best Wishes for 2013 to all members of the group.
