The 223's 1936 rebuild & C-16 movements

November 30, 2012 03:45PM
So here's an interesting bit of history that I gathered from Jimmy's past dispatchers reports. We (the Golden Spike Chapter) knew that the 223 had gone in for a rebuild sometime in 1936-37, but exactly when was unknown until the past year, when we were able to pin it down.

Tuesday the 10th was the last trip the 223 would make for November 1936:

Baldwin branch, extra 223 with helper engine 278
Conductor E P Mahoney

The 223 was pulled from service immediately, and 278 was left behind on the Baldwin Branch. Since a helper was usually needed the 268 was moved dead from Alamosa on November 12:

Interestingly, the 223's first live trip since Nov. 10th was an immediate call to Cimmaron, making the trip light:

Thursday, December 10, 1936
Gunnison extra 223 west, light engine to Cimarron, helper for extra 344 west
Engineer Stamm

Depart Gunnison 9:45 AM
Arrive Cimarron (unable to read)

The purpose? To act as helper for extra 344 West. Note that the 463 is also helping. Imagine that lineup - two Cs and a K.

Extra 344 west with helpers 223 and 463 depart Cimarron 1:30 PM with 14 loads
Arrive Cerro Summit 2:20 PM
Engine 463 depart Cerro Summit light for Montrose
Engine 223 depart Cerro Summit light for Montrose, behind extra 344 west
Extra 344 west depart Cerro Summit time not shown with 14 loads
Arrive Montrose 3:35 PM with 14 loads

The next day the 223 was helper for Extra 344 East...

Friday, December 11, 1936
Montrose extra 344 east with helper engine 223
Conductor Dean
Engine 344 Stamm
Engine 223 Edwards

...and by the 15th was back in regular service on the Baldwin Branch with the 278.

Arrive Gunnison 5:30 PM with 6 loads

The purpose of this post was because I stopped by the shop for the first time since August to check on the 223, and while discussing the jammed main rod (more on that later when we update the chapter blog) I took a closer look at the number 3 driver on the fireman's side, and noticed this date stamped:

IMG_7453.jpg

5-24-37...so what does this stamp mean? Last time it was turned? When it was replaced? I'm not familiar with the shop arrangements in Gunnison...could a wheel be replaced there or would it have to go to Salida? Unfortunately I don't have the DRTMs for May 1937. There were other dates as well, like the 1911 that is seen to the right.

Anyway, interesting stuff, and thanks Jimmy for digitizing these.

Regards,

Josh B.
