Siverton

Hi,
I was looking at the photo on the 2002 calander showing a D&S train nearing Silverton. Its caption said the whistle had just blown to alaert any track walkers.
I got to thinking (I've not read much about the Silverton branch recently and can not find my copy of Cinders and Smoke) much of the D&RGW was from Mears toll roads. But I do not think the a road would have been able to pass the High Line.
Where were the wagon roads for Silverton located prior to the D&RGW? Over Red Mountain to Ouray?
What's a good book to start reading about the Mears lines out of Silverton? I onle know a little about them from D&RGW texts.
