The Country Continues To Burn

June 20, 2002 06:10AM
When the D&SNG RR decided to limit train operations, reactions became mixed.
I think this was needed and in the long run could prevent lasting damage to a beautiful area of the USA. The towns of Durango & Silverton will survive, and the railroad will still be around.
Fire conditions are so extreme in the Southwest, now there is a new Arizona fire. Burning between Heber and Snow Flake (Mogollon Rim area), some 36,000 to 40,000 acres in size, was moving at a rate of 5,000 acres per hour. Arizona fire fighters & equipment were deployed to Colorado & New Mexico, now they are trying to get help from where ever they can.
There are five (5) forest fires burning in Northern New Mexico. None are close to or headed for Chama. The C&TS RR tracks and beauty is still there, some time trains will run again.
Very little rain is in the forecast for next day or so. If and when rain does begin, lightening will be the villain (new fires likely).
