So how long could you extend life?

March 18, 2002 11:35AM
So how long could you extend the life of each C&TS (or D&S) locomotive if you had them all in operable condition. Is it better if you keep them steamed up during the season to avoid expansion/contraction problems, but only use them once every third day instead of every other day? Or, would it be better to let them work hard one year and sleep the next? I guess it seems like the current situation is "wear this group to the bone, and then wear out the next group" .
So, what do the experienced people think would keep "real" steam locomotives on the rails the longest?
