Question

Ok guys here's a good thing to debate:
Why did narrow guage railroads keep ordering the headlights on their steam locomotives on top of the smokebox long after most standard guage railroads had converted to the practice of putting the headlight in the center of the smokebox door?
Even the real late NG engines from Baldwin ( like WP&Y #73 and the Mysore 2' guage mikados) had the traditional headlight location. Was this just that, tradition, or was there some practical reason for it?
