Best coverage ever seen on the USA #3000 usage on the D&RGW
The new Feb/Mar 2002 issue of “Light Iron Digest” magazine has a great 2 page story by Roy E. Johnson, Jr. when he was the USA/General Electric representative 43 years ago assigned to the narrow gauge diesel locomotive #3000. He told how he lived in the X119 service car at Durango and handled many of the technical variances and problems of the locomotive, built to run at 50 degrees below zero. Cover photo and 7 additional photos (all too small) add to the story, including one looking back over cripple train including wrecked #483 after Willow Gulch wreck in 1958. The issue also has a two-page story (5photos) of the origin of all the White Pass & Yukon passenger cars, amazing research!
