ALAMOSA

A lot of entries pertaining to the weather on Cumbres during the previous night and through out the day. In general continued snowing hard, strong wind, drifting very bad, at one point operator reported “can’t see a thing outside depot”. A couple times the wind died down but would start up again.
At 3:35 PM “try clear up, wind down some, getting cold, 17 degrees”.

When dispatcher’s sheet was started for Jan 16 the following memorandum was made:

“24 cars cab on main track between switches Los Pinos not protected by flag, also Ed Morgan’s cab and flanger 2 engs No. 115’s engine west of depot Cumbres and No.115 train east of east switch Cumbres and Hurley’s eng & 9 cars behind No. 115s train Cumbres with out flag protection, all stuck in snow, dispr protect these trains account no flag protection.”

Later notation reads: Hurley on phone 2:45 PM, says been down to his nine cars, they on fill and not snowed up, Wellington drained engine 484, everything except boiler trying to keep it alive until rotary gets there.”

With the exception of one notation on sheet for Jan 17 no details shown for rotary operations between Osier and Cumbres. Notation reads: “2:08 AM ? on phone Cumbres says arrived behind 9 cars & eng 484, Hurley’s head end east of Cumbres at 1:30 AM Eng 476 start back with 9 cars and engine 484 at 3:10 AM.”
(I would imagine at some point they would have stopped for rest period, though this is not reported)

For Cumbres to Chama conductor’s delay report shows “delayed between Cumbres and Chama 3 hours acct wet snow freezing on hood and wheel blocking them necessary to stop and throw out a great many times.”
